Few women had an occupation and if they did, it was most likely not very pleasant. As a woman living in Ancient China, your main role was staying at home to take care of the children, cook food and clean the house. Women often did the sewing, weaving and spinning for the others in the family as well taking it as their occupation. Some peasant women worked with men in the fields. Either way, it was difficult to see a woman working outside of her home. The women of Ancient China did not have a chance to say much about who she married since most marriages were arranged and planned out by the elders and son of the husband's family. Families often seeked the assistance of an astrologer while planning the marriage, looking at birth charts to assume if the husband and wife would be compatible. Although the astrologer was seen as a highly important and wise figure, it was always up to the father to approve the marriage. When the woman first meets her mother-in-law, it was common to bow and serve tea, a sign that they were now part of the husband's family. After marriage, she now needed to serve her husband's family instead of her own.
