As Confucius taught Chinese society, women were second-class citizens and were not equal to men. Women led this unbearable life for thousands of years. Traditional Ancient China was so male-centered that young daughters were sometimes killed at birth for the sole reason that they were female. Far fewer women were educated and literate than men which instructed them to be inferior to men. Before the Republic of China, it was lawful for wealthy men to have several wives, putting the women under the man's possession. Women of Ancient China were discriminated for everything and were made fun of at every stage of their lives. They were required to serve men like slaves and devote their life to them without having any personal dreams or plans for the future. At the birth of a baby girl, many humiliating customs were practiced and Confucian principles governed the women for the rest of their lives. A women's greatest challenge is living the everyday life cycle, perils begin at birth with the threat of infanticide.
